What is GEO and how to apply it to your online store.
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the set of actions that get AI search engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google AI to cite and recommend your brand in their answers. For an ecommerce store it means showing up when a customer asks “what is the best option” instead of browsing a list of links.
Quick summary
- GEO doesn’t replace SEO: it builds on it.
- Nobody can guarantee that an AI will cite you; you can, however, improve the signals and measure the result.
- What weighs most: clear, citable content, structured data, reviews, visible authorship and mentions on reference sites.
GEO vs SEO: differences for an online store
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Get your pages to the top of the results list | Get your brand into the answer the AI generates |
| Unit of success | Rankings and clicks | Mentions and citations of your brand or pages |
| Ideal content | Pages optimised for search | Direct answers, definitions, comparisons and verifiable data |
| Measurement | Search Console and Analytics | Regular query tests in each assistant |
| Stability | Relatively stable | Variable: answers change from one day to the next |
Why it matters for an ecommerce store
When shopping, people use AI to compare and decide: “best serum for sensitive skin”, “which trainers to choose to start running”. Those questions used to end up on a buying guide or a comparison. If your store has those pages and AI uses them as a source, your brand enters the conversation. If not, the answer is built from other people’s.
7 steps to apply GEO to your store
1. Check where you stand today
Pick 15 to 20 queries a customer would use (“best [product] for [need]”, “[your brand] reviews”, “where to buy [product]”). Try them in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google. Note whether you appear, which brands show up and which sources they cite. Repeat the same test every month: a single test isn’t enough, because answers vary.
2. Fix your SEO foundation
If your site isn’t crawled or indexed properly, is slow on mobile or has duplicate content, no model will use it as a source. Check indexing, speed, collection structure and internal links before anything else.
3. Write direct answers
Start each important page by defining what it is about in one or two clear sentences. Then expand. Use headings that reflect real questions (“Which size should I choose?”, “How long does it last?”), short paragraphs and lists where they help.
4. Create buying guides and comparisons
These are the pages most reused in AI answers because they settle a decision. Include selection criteria, the differences between options and who each one is for. Be honest: a comparison that only sells makes everyone suspicious.
5. Add concrete, verifiable data
“Weighs 280 g”, “3-year warranty” or “shipping in 24–48 h” are cited more readily than “lightweight” or “very durable”. When you use a third-party figure, name the source.
6. Implement structured data
Mark up your product pages with Product, Offer (price, availability) and Review or AggregateRating if you have genuine reviews. Add Organization with links to your official profiles and FAQPage on pages with questions. Validate everything with Google’s Rich Results Test.
7. Build a presence beyond your site
Models cross-check sources. Reviews on well-known platforms, mentions in trade media, collaborations and a consistent brand profile (the same name, description and contact details everywhere) reinforce that you exist and can be trusted.
Common mistakes
- Promising or buying “guaranteed citations”. They don’t exist.
- Rewriting everything with AI without reviewing it. Generic content gives nothing worth citing.
- Forgetting authorship. Pages with no byline or company details inspire less trust.
- Measuring only once. GEO is tracked through monthly trends.
- Neglecting SEO. It is the foundation.

Are GEO and AEO the same thing?
They overlap. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) focuses on structuring content as answers that can be extracted; GEO is the broader approach for engines that generate answers with citations. In practice, most of the actions are the same.
How long does GEO take to show results?
Technical improvements can show within weeks; sustained AI visibility and sales usually take several months. It depends on your sector and your competition.
Do I need an agency or can I do it myself?
You can start steps 1 to 5 yourself. The technical side, external authority and ongoing measurement usually need time and specific tools. If you’d like a second opinion, ask for a free audit.
