Out-of-stock or discontinued products: what to do with their URL.
The decision depends on one question: is the product coming back? If it is, keep the page. If it isn’t and there is an equivalent replacement, redirect. If there is no replacement, retire it properly.

Tell three cases apart.
| Case | What to do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Temporarily out of stock | Keep the page, say it is out of stock, offer a restock alert and alternatives, and reflect the availability in the schema. | You keep rankings and links, and the customer can come back. |
| Discontinued with an equivalent replacement | 301 redirect to the closest replacement, not to the home page. | You transfer the value and answer the same search intent. |
| Discontinued with no replacement | Return a 404 or a 410 with a useful error page (categories and search). If it receives traffic or links, consider keeping it with alternatives. | You avoid sending the visitor to a page that doesn’t answer what they were looking for. |
Common mistakes.
- Redirecting all discontinued products to the home page or a generic category: Google may interpret it as a soft error.
- Deleting the page without a redirect when it has incoming links.
- Leaving the price and buy button active when there is no stock.
- Setting noindex on all temporarily out-of-stock products and losing rankings unnecessarily.
- Creating redirect chains instead of going straight to the final destination.
How to reflect it in structured data.
In Product schema, availability is stated in the offer with the availability property (for example InStock, OutOfStock or PreOrder). It must match what the visitor sees and your feed. There is more detail in the product schema guide and in the one on Merchant Center feed.
A simple routine.
- Export the products that have been out of stock for months.
- Cross-check them with Search Console, your analytics (clicks and orders) and incoming links.
- Sort them into the three cases above.
- Apply the redirects or 404s in bulk.
- Check the Search Console pages report a few weeks later.
Frequently asked questions
Does an out-of-stock product lose rankings?
Not necessarily. If it is temporary and you keep the page with useful information, you normally keep them.
Better a 301 or a 404?
A 301 if there is a truly equivalent replacement. If there isn’t, a clean 404 or 410 is usually more honest than a forced redirect.
Can I redirect several products to the same destination?
Yes, if that destination answers what they were looking for. Avoid sending everything to the home page.
Do you have hundreds of out-of-stock products?
In the audit we review which pages to keep, redirect or retire based on traffic, links and sales.
