What it is and what it is for.
Product schema is a block of structured data (usually in JSON-LD format) that describes your product with a vocabulary search engines understand: name, image, price, availability, brand, identifiers and ratings. It enables rich results on Google and gives AI engines clean, unambiguous data.
A minimal example.
This is an illustrative example with fictitious data:
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "Product",
"name": "Ancha 2 wide-fit trail shoe",
"image": "https://yourstore.com/img/ancha-2.jpg",
"description": "Wide-fit trail shoe with a 5 mm sole.",
"sku": "ANC-2-42",
"gtin13": "8412345678905",
"brand": { "@type": "Brand", "name": "YourBrand" },
"offers": {
"@type": "Offer",
"url": "https://yourstore.com/ancha-2",
"priceCurrency": "EUR",
"price": "119.00",
"availability": "https://schema.org/InStock",
"itemCondition": "https://schema.org/NewCondition"
}
}The most important fields are name, image, offers (price, currency and availability) and, where they exist, sku, gtin and brand.
Fields that add value.
aggregateRatingandreview: only with real ratings that are visible on the page.shippingDetailsandhasMerchantReturnPolicy: shipping and returns information, useful in Google Shopping and rich results.color,size,materialand variants: they help tell similar products apart.priceValidUntilon offers with an end date.
Common mistakes.
- Duplicate data: the theme, an app and the SEO plugin output schema at the same time and contradict each other.
- Schema price or availability that differ from what the customer sees on the product page.
- Ratings that don’t appear on the page or aren’t real.
- Missing identifier (GTIN) when the manufacturer has one.
- Not validating after every theme or plugin change.
How to check it.
Validate your product pages with Google’s Rich Results Test and the Schema.org validator, and check the product reports in Search Console. Schema doesn’t guarantee rankings or citations, but it is the product data foundation Google and AI engines use. If you want us to review your store’s, it is part of the audit and of the Technical SEO.
Frequently asked questions
Does schema improve my Google ranking?
It doesn’t guarantee it. It enables rich results and gives the search engine clear data, which is a necessary foundation.
Can I mark up ratings that aren’t visible on the page?
No. Structured data must reflect visible, real content.
JSON-LD or microdata?
JSON-LD is the easiest format to maintain and the one Google recommends.
