What llms.txt is.
llms.txt is a text file at the root of your website (yourstore.com/llms.txt) that offers a Markdown summary of your best pages so language models can find them easily. It is a proposal, not an official standard.
Do ChatGPT or Google use it?
Based on what we found in mid-2026, no major AI provider has publicly confirmed that it reads llms.txt to answer questions, and Google has said it doesn’t use it as a signal and that it neither helps nor harms your rankings. Anyone who promises you citations for adding it is getting ahead of the evidence.
What it can contribute: some development tools and agents that do consult this kind of file, and an orderly summary of your website.
So, should I add it?
Our view: it is cheap, does no harm and can be useful, so we have it switched on, but we don’t treat it as a results lever. A crawlable website, a clean sitemap, correct structured data and content that answers your customers’ questions weigh far more. If you create one, make it list only important pages (key categories, guides, policies) and not thin pages.
What to include on an online store.
- A short description of the store and what it sells.
- The main categories.
- The most useful buying guides and comparisons.
- The shipping, returns and contact pages.
How to measure it without fooling yourself.
Test real queries before and after, several times and on different days, and don’t attribute to a file what may be normal variability in the answers. We explain the method in how to measure your visibility in ChatGPT. At Rankedora we use the file generated by Yoast SEO.
