How to appear in ChatGPT with your online store: 7 steps.

Nobody can guarantee that ChatGPT will cite you, but you can improve the signals that influence it. These are the steps, in order.

1. Check how you are seen today.

Before changing anything, ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI the way a customer would: the product category plus a specific need, for example “wide-fit trail running shoes”. Try between 10 and 20 queries and note whether they mention your store, who they recommend and which sources they cite. That is your starting point.

2. Allow them to crawl you.

Check your robots.txt file. OpenAI uses different crawlers for different purposes: OAI-SearchBot so your pages can appear in ChatGPT search, GPTBot for model training and ChatGPT-User for visits made at a user’s request. You can decide on each one separately. If you want to appear in the answers, don’t block the search crawler, Googlebot or Bingbot.

3. Get your product data in order.

Price, availability, brand, identifiers (GTIN), variants and shipping must be the same on the product page, in the schema and in your feed. If the data contradicts itself, it is harder for an AI to use it with confidence. Start with product schema and the Merchant Center feed.

4. Create content that is easy to cite.

Buying guides, comparisons and answers to real questions are the pages that get cited most. Answer the question in the first lines, use clear headings, include your own data (measurements, materials, tests) and avoid waffle.

5. Strengthen trust.

Real, visible reviews, a clear returns policy, company information and contact details. These are signals people also use to decide, and they help your brand be seen as a reliable source. See reviews and schema in ecommerce.

6. Get mentions outside your website.

AIs don’t only read your store: they also read media, comparisons, forums and directories. Appearing in those sources with consistent information increases the chances of being recommended. That is the job of editorial link building.

7. Measure every month and repeat.

Repeat your queries every month, record appearances and sources, and compare with your starting point. AI results change often, so what matters is the trend. We explain how in how to measure your visibility in ChatGPT.

What doesn’t work.

  • Promising or buying “guarantees” of appearing in ChatGPT.
  • Publishing content in bulk with no original data or review.
  • Blocking the crawlers and expecting to be cited.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to show?

There is no fixed timeframe. Crawling and data improvements can show in weeks, but mentions depend on how sources and models evolve, so it is best to measure month by month.

Do I need an llms.txt file?

It isn’t a requirement. You can see what it is and whether it’s worth it in llms.txt for ecommerce.

Does paying to appear work?

There is no payment that makes an AI recommend you in its organic answers. What you can do is improve your brand’s signals.
