What AI Overviews are.

They are AI-generated summaries that Google shows above the results for some searches, with links to the sources it uses. Google’s AI Mode offers a similar conversational search experience. Both can reduce clicks on informational queries, although they also link to the pages they cite.

What Google says about appearing.

According to Google’s documentation for website owners, there is no special markup or technique to appear in these features: the page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet in Google. In other words, SEO fundamentals remain the foundation. If you restrict snippets with directives such as nosnippet or max-snippet, you also limit how your content can be used.

How it affects an ecommerce store.

Informational searches (“how to choose…”, “what is the difference between…”) are the most exposed to summarised answers. Shopping searches rely heavily on product data: price, availability, reviews and shipping. That is why it pays to look after both the guides and the product pages and the feed.

What to do.

  • Secure the technical base: crawling, indexing and speed. Review technical SEO for ecommerce.
  • Answer real questions clearly in buying guides and comparisons, starting with the answer.
  • Look after your product data: consistent schema, feed and reviews. See product schema and Merchant Center feed.
  • Build brand and mentions: being a recognised source helps both people and the systems that select sources.

How to measure it.

Google has indicated that activity from these features is counted within the Search Console search performance report, with no filter of its own at the time of writing. That is why it pays to track impressions, clicks and orders by page type and compare trends, and to complement this with manual tests of key queries.

Frequently asked questions

Can I avoid appearing in AI Overviews?

Yes, with snippet directives such as nosnippet, but you would also limit how your content is shown in the results. Weigh the cost before applying it.

Do I need to create different content for AI?

It isn’t necessary. Google says SEO fundamentals still apply. What helps is clear, useful and well-structured content.

Do AI Overviews affect product pages?

They can influence the informational searches that lead to them. Keep price, stock, reviews and structured data consistent.
