Product descriptions that rank on Google and that AI can cite
Quick answer
A good product description answers buying doubts with concrete data (who it is for, measurements, materials, compatibility, returns) instead of repeating the manufacturer’s text. Start with one clear sentence, list the key data and add something other stores don’t say. It is the kind of content Google rewards and that an AI can summarise without making things up.
Most product pages repeat the manufacturer’s text. That means dozens of stores compete with the same paragraph and neither Google nor an AI has any reason to pick yours. A good description does two things at once: it helps a person buy and it gives clear data that a machine can read and cite.
What people want when they land on a product page
Answering five questions almost always does it: who it is for, what problem it solves, what it is like in concrete terms (measurements, materials, compatibility), how it compares with alternatives and what happens if it doesn’t fit (shipping, returns, warranty). If your text doesn’t answer that, the visit goes to another store.
A structure that works
- An opening sentence that says what it is and who it is for. No empty adjectives. It is the sentence most likely to be cited.
- The key data as a list: materials, measurements, weight, compatibility, what is in the box.
- Concrete uses. Real situations, not generic promises.
- Differences from similar models in your catalogue, to help people choose and not to push.
- Care, warranty and returns in a few lines.
- Product FAQs if there really are any.

The second version gives verifiable data, resolves a buying doubt and points to another product when appropriate. It is also the one an AI can summarise without making anything up.
What to avoid
- Copying the supplier’s text. It is duplicate content across many stores.
- Stuffing with keywords. Write for people and use search terms where they fit naturally.
- Inventing features or promising results the product doesn’t deliver.
- Chasing a length. There is no magic word count. The description is as long as the product needs.
Where to start if you have thousands of product pages
Don’t rewrite them all. Sort by revenue and by impressions in Search Console, and start with the 20 or 50 that matter most. Then create an attribute template per category so that the rest of the product pages, even with less text, always publish the same key data.
The data also has to be marked up
The visible text and the structured data must match. If the product page says 780 g and the markup says something else, you lose trust. For the fields that matter, see product schema for ecommerce and reviews and schema. Real reviews, moreover, add the kind of detail no manufacturer writes.

How many words should a product description have?
There is no right figure. It should be as long as the product needs to resolve buying doubts.
Can I use the manufacturer’s description?
You can start from its technical data, but if you copy the text as it is you will have the same content as other stores and little reason to stand out.
Do AIs read product descriptions?
Assistants with search read pages and structured data. Clear, consistent data makes it easier for them to understand and summarise the product.
How do I write thousands of product pages?
