Which sources AI cites to recommend online stores (and how to get into them)

Quick answer

There is no single list of sources: each assistant reads different websites and its answer changes from one query to the next. In recent Sourcelift tests on agencies, ChatGPT mostly cited agency websites and Perplexity cited media and press releases. These are small samples from another sector, but they point to a useful method for your store: note which domains appear in the answers for your category and work on the ones that repeat.

Why sources matter and not just your website

An AI assistant doesn’t answer from memory. According to Google’s official guide, its AI features retrieve relevant pages from its index (a technique called RAG) and launch several related queries in parallel (query fan-out) to complete the answer. Other assistants use their own, less well documented mechanisms. In every case, your brand appears if any of the pages the engine reads talks about you: yours, a media outlet, a comparison, a review listing or a forum.

That explains an uncomfortable fact: ranking high on Google is not enough. In a Sourcelift diagnosis, an education group with seven times its competitor’s organic traffic appeared in 15 of 45 AI answers; the competitor appeared in 27.

What the most recent tests show

In October 2026 Sourcelift published four tests on how assistants answer buying questions about GEO agencies in Spain. They serve as an example of method, with three caveats: they are small samples (one run per question), the analysis is signed by an agency that appears in it, and it concerns marketing services, not ecommerce products.

  • The answers barely overlap. In 10 answers from Perplexity and Google’s AI Mode to five questions, 35 different agencies appeared, and 25 of them only once.
  • ChatGPT and Perplexity read different sites. In the test on 6 October, without being logged in, 13 of the 16 sites ChatGPT cited were agency websites. Of Perplexity’s 30 links, 16 came from media or press releases.
  • Press releases get in. On 8 October, two of the ten sources Perplexity used for a query about the best SEO agency were press releases published on Europa Press.
  • In Spanish the source is linked less often. Excluding Google, 14 of 32 answers in English linked the original source versus 7 of 32 in Spanish (44% versus 22%).
  • The answer changes within minutes. Perplexity changed its first recommendation four minutes after the question was repeated, and Google replaced two of its seven agencies after five.

What this means for an online store

These data don’t say which sources assistants cite when someone asks about trainers or a coffee machine. The sensible approach is to treat them as hypotheses that your own measurement must confirm or rule out. For a store, the candidate sources are these:

Type of sourceExamplesWhat you can do
Your pagesProduct pages, collections, buying guidesMake sure they are indexed, crawlable and carry original information: measurements, uses, comparisons, real photos
Product dataMerchant Center feed, structured dataKeep them complete and in sync with your website
Media and blogsComparisons, best-product lists, press releasesProvide data or products that deserve an editorial mention
ReviewsYour own ratings and those on external platformsCollect real opinions and reply to them
Forums and videoOpinion threads, video reviewsBe present with useful content, without spam

Google confirms that its AI features can show opinions from across the web about products and services, including those from blogs, videos and forum discussions, and that manufacturing fake mentions doesn’t work. The realistic lever is to deserve the mention.

How to measure your sources in an hour

  1. Write 15 or 20 real buying questions. Mix unbranded searches (the best trekking backpack for women), comparisons (X versus Y) and location questions (where to buy X in Spain).
  2. Run them through several engines: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI Mode, logged out and on the same day.
  3. Repeat each question three times. Answers vary, so a single run is not a valid measure.
  4. Record which brands appear, in what order and which domains each answer cites.
  5. Classify the domains (your site, competitors, media, comparisons, reviews, forums, marketplaces) and mark the ones that repeat.
  6. Pick five domains that repeat and define a realistic action for each one.

A spreadsheet with these columns is enough. The row is an illustrative example.

Repeat the exercise every month with the same questions. The full method is in how to measure your visibility in ChatGPT and other AI. For your presence on Google, the generative AI features performance report in Search Console shows how people find you in AI Overviews and AI Mode.

How to get into those sources without cheating

  • Publish something nobody else has. Original data, a guide based on your experience with the product, tests with real photos. Google insists that original content adds more than summarising what already exists.
  • Look after the technical basics. If a page isn’t indexed or can’t be crawled, it can’t appear in Google’s AI features.
  • Look for editorial mentions with a reason. A study, a launch, an industry data point. A press release can end up as a source, but it only makes sense if there is news. See how we approach it in link building for ecommerce.
  • Get real reviews and reply to them.
  • Avoid bought mentions and texts written only for AI. Google includes them among the practices you can ignore.

Frequently asked questions

Which sources does ChatGPT cite to recommend stores?

There is no public list. In October 2026 tests on agencies, ChatGPT mostly cited sites of companies in the sector. For your category, the only reliable thing is to measure it with your own questions.

Is ranking first on Google enough for AI to cite me?

No. In a case measured by Sourcelift, a group with seven times more organic traffic than its competitor appeared in 15 of 45 AI answers versus the competitor’s 27. Google traffic and presence in AI are different metrics.

Do press releases help you appear in AI?

They can end up as a source: in one query, Perplexity used two releases published on Europa Press. There is no guarantee, so use them only when there is real news.

How often should I repeat the measurement?

Once a month, with the same questions and several repetitions, because answers change within minutes and over time.

Where can I see my presence in Google’s AI features?

In Search Console, in the generative AI performance report, which shows how users reach your content from AI Overviews and AI Mode.
